The thing about history is … we think we’ve heard it all, and yet we know so little. And the more I learn, the hungrier I become. “Sarah’s Key” is a beautiful, heartwrenching book set around the horrific events of Vel’ d’Hiv in July 1942, a part of the Second World War about which I had never heard. And since it involved approximately 10,000 victims it is once again a story that needs to be known and shared. This book was told in dual timeline, and truth be told, I could have done without the present tense storyline, but the author did a beautiful job of making that storyline important as far as sharing an effective message. Her characters come to understand the importance of both understanding and acknowledging the mortal crimes of the past, and I can tell you I will not soon forget this story, nor its haunting characters.
